Education
While Charlottesville is home to
the nationally acclaimed University of Virginia, the area offers
a variety of schools that maintain the area's tradition of
excellence.
The city offers seven elementary
schools, one middle school, and one high school. County schools
provide 15 more elementary schools, five more middle schools,
and three more high schools. The city and county school systems
operate independently of each other and enroll over 15,000
students.
With 22 private schools to
choose from, parents who want to send their children to private schools
have a plethora of options. Secular and non-secular private schools
accommodate students of all ages. The area also has schools for
challenged students with special needs.
Local students can continue
their educations at Piedmont Virginia Community College and the
University of Virginia, both of which blend quality educations and
convenience. Piedmont Virginia Community College offers general
education, college preparatory programs, and continuing education. The
school, which is in its 26th year of service, enrolls about 7000
students every year. Each of these students have the option of getting
involved with the local business community through worker-training and
re-training programs.
The University of Virginia,
one of the top institutions for higher education in the nation, is
another option for higher education in the area. Enrolling over 12,000
undergraduate, graduate, and professional students each year, the school
blends the energy of a large university with the intimacy of strong
faculty-student relations. The faculty has won awards for research in
fields like the environment, medicine, education, and nursing. With
seven libraries and several top-ranking professional schools, the
University of Virginia lives up to the standards of its founder, Thomas
Jefferson. |
