R. Edward Howell, vice president and CEO of the University of Virginia Medical Center, has been selected by the editorial board of Inside the Minds (www.Aspatore.com) as a leader in his industry, and is the author of a chapter in the recently released book, Leadership Plans for CEOs, published by Aspatore Books. Leadership Plans for CEOs is an authoritative insider's perspective on the best strategies for leading an organization toward its goals. Mr. Howell's chapter is "Looking to the Horizon and Beyond," in which he shares his insights for meeting challenges and "golden rules" for CEOs.

"Writing this chapter was an opportunity for me to define what it takes to lead a health care system or any large organization. Planning ahead in a climate of constant change can be a challenge," Howell says. "Two big changes I see for the hospital industry are the introduction of philanthropy as a significant channel for meeting the shortage of capital funding and the need for increased involvement of leadership in physician recruitment – we are on the verge of a severe shortage of physicians, particularly medical specialists."

Dr. David Martin, CEO of Charlottesville’s M•CAM and Intellectual Property Finance Fellow at the Batten Institute at University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business Administration addressed the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) Open Forum on the draft Substantive Patent Law Treat (SPLT) on March 2. The Forum was assembled by the member States of WIPO at the 32nd session of the General Assembly in the context of discussions on the establishment of a work plan for the Standing Committee on the Law of Patents (SCP) in respect of the draft SPLT. The SCP has been discussing the draft SPLT since May 2001. Although a number of issues in the draft SPLT have been agreed in principle, there are a number of outstanding issues that require further consideration. The Forum was to address various issues that have been raised in the draft of the SPLT or that Member States may wish to include in the draft SPLT.

During this time of extreme international trade focus on matters of Intellectual Property law and enforcement, this Forum will bring together policy makers and experts from around the world to seek to better define the ground rules for improved patent treaties.

More information about the conference can be found here.

Diffusion Pharmaceuticals LLC, a drug discovery and development company pioneering a revolutionary mechanism of action to treat life-threatening diseases, recently announced that toxicology testing of its lead drug, TSC, is currently underway at MPI Research, a leading provider of preclinical services. These studies are funded in part by a grant from the Office of Naval Research.

“These preclinical studies are exacting, expensive, and critical as they represent the last required animal milestone before we file our application with the FDA for first human testing” said David G. Kalergis, JD/MBA, Diffusion’s Chief Executive Officer. “The results of these studies will help guide the design of our clinical trials,” he continued.

Diffusion Pharmaceuticals LLC plans to begin human testing of TSC in 2006 with a phase I study in normal healthy volunteers. Completion of this study will provide the foundation for further testing of TSC in populations suffering from such life-threatening conditions as hemorrhagic shock, treatment-resistant cancerous tumors, stroke and respiratory disorders.
